Dimensions Support to Develop Effective Personality

Dimensions Support to Develop Effective Personality

Introduction:
In the history of mankind, the world has witnessed great personalities who made lot of impact on the people during their lifetime. The early concept of personality came from the Greek word “Persona” which means a mask used by dramatic actor to hide their own identity on the stage. Personality is the sum total  of the physical, mental, emotional and social characteristics of a person. It is the reflection of one’s character and that character is built on one’s internal qualities like intelligence, knowledge, value system, creativity, reasoning, self-esteem, self-confidence, positive attitude, leadership qualities and team work.

In the present days, the scientific concepts of personality stress the motivational as well as the behavioural aspects of the individual. They emphasize not only “how the individual appears to others” but “what he actually is and why he is as he is”. Personality is a specific social quality required by an individual. It is the level of socio-interactive skills which makes others to react positively and more favourably towards that person. It is of great significance in all areas of complex society and a pleasing personality is a guarantee of success and happiness.

Real personality, which is character is remembered by the world through eternity. The number of such people, though small, can shape the destiny of mankind. Their names remain imprinted in the hearts of millions of people forever. The sign of life is struggled for growth but growth alone doesn’t add beauty to life. Shaping the growth through proper training and systematic discipline is the only way to make the life beautiful. This ultimately leads to full-fledged personality.

Real development of personality is in four dimensions. They are (1) Physical (2) Mental (3) Intellectual and (4) Spiritual. A harmonious growth of all these aspects constitutes the real personality. One must strive for sound health, strong mind, pure intellect and spiritual growth simultaneously.

1. Physical Dimension:
The human body is a rare gift of god. The body and mind are closely related to each other. Good health is the source of happiness and success in life. Developing good habits regarding food, sleep, exercise and work is the secret of good health. Ill-health causes mental worries and depression not enabling to pursue a definite goal. A healthy person always keeps his mind cool in all circumstances. He performs his duties efficiently, cheerfully and enthusiastically. Therefore, one must transform his physical energy into constructive purpose.

Important aspects which play a vital role in development of physical dimension are habits, practice of yogasana, discipline, self-control etc.

a). Habits: Good habits play a vital role in developing physical dimension. “First man makes habits, but next habits makes man”. Tender and immature mind of youth can easily succumb to the temptations of bad habits. Therefore, parents and teachers should keep watch over them and motivate them to cultivate good habits.
b). Yogasana: Practice of yogasana and breathing exercise is the most effective method to keep the body fit. Nutritious food, regular exercise, meditation, cultivating good habits discipline and self control help to improve the health which forms a part of personality development.

2. Mental Dimension:
Mind is the repository of thoughts. Mind makes the body. Very few can attain success without pitfalls. But if one want success he has to face several hurdles.  Real hero is one who welcomes challenges in life and face them with boldness and courage. Underestimating one’s own capacity and constantly thinking in a negative way is the prime cause of one’s mental weakness. A weak and uncontrolled mind always succumbs to temptations, creating havoc within a person. The habit of brooding over failure give rise to negative thoughts. The main characteristics of weak mind are restlessness, fear, tension, laziness, frustration, superstition, alienation and negative thinking. A strong mind always remains calm even in adversities and says ‘no’ to immoral thoughts and actions. Sound mind is always free from suspicion, jealousy and prejudice. It will always take right decisions. A strong and disciplined mind acts like a friend but a weak and uncontrolled mind acts like enemy and leads to destruction. Positive thinking, concentration, fearlessness, adventurous nature and self confidence are the virtual qualities of a strong mind which are very much essential especially for present youth. Practicing meditation   also forms part of our personality development.
a). Positive thinking: We see this world through the prism of our own mind as it is a bunch of thoughts. The power of thinking is given only to the human being. A man who does not think is not a human being at all. There are infinite possibilities hidden in each one of us but negative thinking is the cause of many physical and mental disorders. So we have to set right our prism by developing positive thinking. Positive thinking can help us to get rid of our physical and mental problems. It helps us to achieve our goal  and ultimately lead us to reach the goal of life. The teachings and the lives of great people show us the right way of thinking. Positive thinking is an art of controlling the senses and tuning them in the right way. Every thing will change, the moment, we change our way of thinking.   Since it is an internal process, by learning the art of positive thinking one can create heaven in hell.
b). Self-confidence: Confidence is not  a gift of god. It has to be cultivated with self-effort and diligence. It is a major component in determining success. The only difference between ordinary people and great ones is confidence. Great people never consider defeats and failures as obstacles. On the contrary, they turn them into stepping stones to success. Self-confidence gives the internal drive. However, an ordinary man gets discouraged and stops moving further. Self-confidence is a basic psychological need in every person and it is the secret of a  healthy, dynamic and autonomous personality. Self-confidence becomes grater, the more it is used.

3. Intellectual Dimension:
Intellectual strength is superior to physical and mental strength and hence it forms an important part of our personality. Though this dimension is present in every one, the excessive use of modern electronic units has converted man into a machine. Therefore, it is time for youth to concentrate on originality, creativity and deep thinking  rather than on artificiality, imitation and superficial thinking to achieve success in life.  An intellect will be able to discriminate between right and wrong. Modern youth have to grasp from what is good and bad.

4. Spiritual Dimension:
This dimension  is very important in the mortal body. In this mortal body there is something immortal, eternal and of the nature of pure consciousness, bliss, peace and source of tremendous power, energy and knowledge. It is of the nature of effluent light which never undergoes any change, free from birth, old age and death. From it spring all divine qualities such as love, compassion, service, purity, truthfulness, fearlessness etc. That is our divine nature. The purpose of human life is to manifest this divinity within, irrespective of caste, creed, gender, colour, position and status. A person of pure mind alone can realize this divine. Regular practice of four Yogas i.e., Bhakti Yoga - the path of devotion, Karma Yoga -  the path of selfless action, Raja Yoga - the path of meditation will help us to manifest our divine nature, removing all impurities from the mind, Jnana  Yoga - the path of discrimination. This will help to develop the spiritual dimension of our personality. Spiritual dimension is superior to all other aspects of personality. The physical body is made of nature and will go back to it source after death. Spiritual dimension is the only way to make an average man/woman a good one, a good one to a better one and a better one to the best one.

Personality Development in Youth
Now-a-days, modern youth are having lot of pressure from the childhood  to stand first in class, to get good rank and  to show the best performance etc. On the other hand employers demand skilled and experienced hands because of which there is heavy competition to secure jobs. Due to all these several factors the minds of the youth are becoming storehouse of multiple complexes resulting in depression and psychological disorders. To face these challenges it is obvious that youth need to equip themselves with super human strength. Modern education is not enough for youth. They have to prepare for the battle of life through development of personality which is based on development of character. Modern youth are very interested especially in personality development. But they are in a hurry and want to change instantly. They are not aware of the difference between “change the personality and develop personality”. Anyone can change personality by making changes in hairstyle, dressing etc., but this will not change their inner qualities.

Real personality development is based on true education, time management, stress management,  will-power and decision-making.
i). True Education: It is the means by which character is formed. Through education the strength of mind is increased, the intellect is expanded and one can stand on one’s own feet. Today, we need this type of education to youth who can rebuild our nation. Education is the manifestation of perfection already in man.
ii). Time Management: Time is the most precious  asset of all. It is a unique resource. If time is lost it means you cannot get it back. One should basically be punctual in all circumstances. Punctuality is the fundamental principle of time which requires a person to plan the time for activities and adhere to the time schedules without any deviation. Time management is an important skill that everyone has to develop. It helps us to reduce anxiety and tensions. This ensures that you have time to relax after busy hours and it is an important way to gain a sense of control. Those who are happy tend to be punctual and efficient. A right decision during the right time leads to  bright future. Therefore, one should plan  his/her time properly and prosper in life. They should not postpone today’s work to tomorrow.
iii). Stress Management: Stress as most people know is pressure, tension, hyper-tension, strain etc. Stress is a state of mental strain. It can be described as anything which upsets the equilibrium of a person. It is much more in the present world as man today tends to live beyond his capacity to cope up. Stress can be physical, mental or emotional. To eliminate stress the youth should diminish unnecessary wants, cultivate wisdom and think on positive lines for cheerfulness and extrovert activities.
iv). Will-power: Today’s youth must develop tremendous will-power to develop moral strength and fight against social evils. Keeping quiet  is not a great virtue. Everyone need  positive force to spread good ideas and thoughts.
v). Decision-making: Right decision leads to a bright future. Decision may be regarded as a choice whereby a decision maker comes to a conclusion about a given situation. Great personalities take decisions efficiently and effectively. A decision represents a course of behaviour selected from a number of possible alternatives. Decisions are not static and have to be respective to varying situations. All the failures and problems one faces today are due to the wrong and untimely decisions made in the past. On the other hand all the success and happiness one enjoys today are due to the correct and timely decisions made in the past.

Thus, a harmonious growth of the physical, mental, intellectual and spiritual dimension is essential for the all-round development of personality. Struggle for perfection in all these aspects will ultimately lead  to the development of the real personality. Once youth succeed in doing that, there will be a tremendous quality change in their lives. A great number of such people will certainly form a better society whereby the youth of the country will raise the nation  once again to its highest glory.
